Dia's most recent conversion, its museum in Beacon, is located in a former printing plant built in 1929 by Nabisco (National Biscuit Company). With 160,000 square feet (15,000 m 2), it is one of the largest exhibition spaces in the country for modern and contemporary art.ĭia pioneered the conversion of industrial buildings for the installation of contemporary art, a practice and aesthetic now widely adopted by museums and galleries internationally.

Along with Dia's permanent collection, Dia Beacon also presents temporary exhibitions, as well as public programs designed to complement the collection and exhibitions, including monthly Gallery Talks, Merce Cunningham Dance Company Events, Community Free Days for neighboring counties, and an education program that serves area students at all levels. Dia Beacon's facility, the Riggio Galleries, is a former Nabisco box-printing facility that was renovated by Dia with artist Robert Irwin and architects Alan Koch, Lyn Rice, Galia Solomonoff, and Linda Taalman, then of OpenOffice. The museum, which opened in 2003, is situated on the banks of the Hudson River in Beacon, New York.

Cowpers Co.ĭia Beacon is the museum for the Dia Art Foundation's collection of art from the 1960s to the present and is one of the 11 locations and sites they manage. Six hours each week at Dia on either Thursdays or Fridays, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.U.S. Prerequisite(s): students with advanced coursework in contemporary art or education. Admission by special permission and limited to no more than 6 students with advanced coursework in contemporary art or education. In the second term, interns draw from these perspectives in order to design and give tours to school groups, primarily from the Dutchess County public schools. Interns also study the latest advances in museum education: constructivist learning theories vis-à-vis the work of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and John Dewey their practical application in art museums the research being done at other institutions, for example, Harvard University’s Project Zero. In the first term, interns focus on the ideas, work, and histories of the individual Dia artists, who were and continue to be some of the most ambitious and pioneering artists of the late 1960s through to the present day. The Dia: Beacon-Vassar College program offers a yearlong, immersive fieldwork experience for the study of the Dia collection in the context of the philosophical mission of Dia Art Foundation and its public programming.
